Port Authority of Thailand Elevates Efficiency with Allison Automatic Transmissions in Terminal Tractor Fleet

BANGKOK, Thailand, March, 2024 – Allison Transmission, a global leader in manufacturing conventional, electric hybrid, and fully electric vehicle propulsion solutions and the largest producer of fully automatic transmissions for medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles, commemorates its enduring partnership with the Port Authority of Thailand (PAT). This collaboration has set a long track record of enhancing efficiency and ensuring durability within Thailand's port operations.

Acknowledged as a top 10 state enterprise in Thailand, PAT oversees operations at five ports nationwide. This includes the two largest ports: Bangkok Port, recognized as one of the world's busiest, managing an annual cargo handling volume of approximately 1.5 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit), and Laem Chabang Port, serving as the primary deep-sea port that complements the former.

PAT operates a fleet of 150 industry-leading Terberg and Kalma Ottawa terminal tractors at its two key ports, each equipped with robust Cummins EURO 5 diesel engines and Allison 3000 Series™ fully automatic transmissions. Navigating the dynamic 24/7 port environment with precision, these tractors prioritize safety amid demanding start-stop duty-cycles, operating adeptly at low speeds with high torque over short distances. Impressively, they meet a mandate to operate for at least 40,000 hours without downtime, showcasing PAT's unwavering dedication to uninterrupted service and safety standards.

“For over half a century, Allison's fully automatic transmissions are the unsung heroes assisting our drivers in maintaining focus and preventing accidents within the port environment. They contribute to smooth and swift cargo movement, advanced yard management, connectivity, and safety. Our drivers never have to bother shifting gears, and there is no concern about the maintenance, as Allison transmissions only require fluid replacement over an extended time,” said Suriya Tongsila, Director of the Port Equipment Maintenance Division at PAT. "We are genuinely happy with the performance and reliability of Allison automatic transmissions. This partnership has significantly contributed to our operational success."

"Our port performance indicators, including crane productivity and berth occupancy, consistently surpass our expectations. Working with our strategic partners such as Allison Transmission, we target to further enhance truck turnaround time this year. Leveraging this positive momentum, we are poised to actively contribute to Thailand's ambition of emerging as one of the premier exporters in Asia by 2027."

Allison’s 3000 Series™ is designed for medium-duty commercial vehicles and is engineered to adapt and operate efficiently in a variety of applications. The 3000 Series is built to make medium-duty vehicles more fuel-efficient and easier to operate.
