Allison Transmission Delivers Fully Automatic Transmission for Road Sweeper in Stockholm Area

The machine from Ströman Maskin AB is built to handle both sweeping, suctioning, snow removal and de-icing – depending on the weather and season. To create comfort for the driver, the machine was equipped with an Allison fully automatic transmission, which enables smooth gearshifts and ease of use.

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, September 2021 – Allison Transmission, a leading designer and manufacturer of conventional and electrified vehicle propulsion solutions and the largest global manufacturer of medium- and heavy-duty fully automatic transmissions for commercial and defense vehicles, has delivered one of their high-quality fully automatic transmissions for a new road sweeper from Ströman Maskin AB.

Following a public procurement, a municipality in Stockholm chose to invest in a new road sweeper from Ströman Maskin AB. Requirements were placed on load capacity, good working environment and the ability to handle multiple applications such as sweeping and snow plowing.

The result was a machine built on a Scania XT chassis, with a chameleon system that allows the customer to turn the sweeper into a truck for snow removal or de-icing. For the best possible driving experience and good working speeds for each task, the vehicle has been equipped with an Allison fully automatic transmission.

“After we received the order, we bought a Scania truck from Bilab in Kungälv which was then sent to Bucher Municipal, our principal in Denmark. They built the vehicle to match the customer’s wishes and then it came back to us for completion. In June this year, we delivered the vehicle and after some training with the customer, it is now out driving on the streets,” said Magnus Roslund, at Ströman Maskin AB.

“Right now, the machine is used for both maintenance sweeping and suctioning and will be until winter comes. Then we have prepared the vehicle so that the customer can change from a summer vehicle to a winter vehicle, so that instead of sweeping it can be used for snow removal and de-icing when the weather requires,” said Roslund.

The vehicle is equipped with an Allison 4500 Series fully automatic transmission. The transmission has also been calibrated to cope with low speeds with the help of Allison Authorized partner, IM Transmission in Stockholm.

“Our customer had used other gearboxes before, but something that made them appreciate and choose a transmission from Allison was that it can offer soft gear shifts and opportunities to create good working speeds for each use. The machine will travel in city traffic during both summer and winter, so it was extra important for the customer that it could handle lower speeds and be both comfortable and safe for the driver. Therefore, the fully automatic transmission from Allison is a good choice. It is basically just to put the pedal to the metal and drive,” said Roslund.
