Strasbourg Eurométropole Accelerates the Renewal of its Vehicle Fleet with Allison Transmissions

Strasbourg Eurométropole has a fleet of 300 heavy-duty vehicles, 100 of which are equipped with Allison fully automatic transmissions. These vehicles are dedicated to the maintenance of public spaces and roads, including urban cleanliness, household waste collection and sanitation in the city of Strasbourg and the 33 municipalities surrounding it.

Paris, September 2023 – As part of the deployment of the LEZ (Low-Emission Zone), which started in January 2023, Strasbourg Eurométropole has accelerated the renewal of its fleet of road and household waste collection vehicles. The city is upgrading its fleet with 35 new refuse collection vehicles equipped with Allison fully automatic transmissions in the coming months.

The renewal of the fleet started in 2020 and will extend until 2025 to meet the needs of the LEZ, representing an unprecedented investment, three times higher than average.

“With the deployment of the LEZ, it was important for us to have an exemplary approach. We favour vehicles meeting Crit’Air 1 or 0. We also attach great importance to the working conditions of our operators,” said Pia Imbs, President of Strasbourg Eurométropole.

“We therefore chose the Allison automatic transmission for its reliability and ease of use, but also its driving flexibility and comfort for our drivers. With this transmission, they are more confident behind the wheel and can remain focused on the road,” said Benoît Weinling, Vehicle Fleet Manager for the Strasbourg Eurométropole.

Driving heavy-duty vehicles in an urban environment with heavy traffic is increasingly difficult and stressful for drivers. They must remain focused.

“Allison fully automatic transmissions take the pressure off drivers by automatically managing gears and allowing them to maintain full control of their vehicle during precision manoeuvres. Vehicles also benefit from uninterrupted acceleration and smooth shifting without losing speed,” said Stéphane Gonnand, Area Sales Manager, Allison Transmission France. This allows teams to optimise their work in urban areas and limit inconvenience for local residents. And thanks to the absence of a clutch, vehicles equipped with the Allison automatic transmission limit downtime, for optimised vehicle availability and productivity and reduced maintenance costs.”
