600 Starts and Stops Per Day – Reliable Vehicles Are Key for Swedish Refuse and Recycling Company
GÖTEBORG, Sweden, January 2025 – Nordisk Återvinning, a wholly owned subsidiary of Norsk Gjenvinning Renovasjon AS, Norway’s largest player in waste and recycling, supplies refuse services to municipalities and inter-municipal refuse companies throughout Sweden. As a driver at Nordisk Återvinning, one spends about 6 to 7 hours in the truck each day. Tasks include navigating narrow turnarounds and handling hundreds of stops, which places high demands on both the drivers and the vehicles.
That is why Nordisk Återvinning equips most of its trucks with transmissions from Allison Transmission.
“Our drivers often work in environments where small improvements can make a big difference. That’s why we actively work with municipalities and clients to improve turnarounds and make it easier for our drivers. But when the external environment cannot be improved, it’s vital that the interior of the truck offers comfort and security, and Allison contributes significantly to that,” said Anders Karlsson, Transport Manager at Nordisk Återvinning.
A workday for the drivers at Nordisk Återvinning often involves up to 600 starts and stops. The vehicles travel short distances in challenging environments, which places particularly high demands on transmission performance.
“In waste management, it’s important to maintain high operational reliability. If the operation doesn’t work, it can lead to major problems. We have up to 600 starts and stops every day, so it’s a huge advantage to drive with a fully automatic transmission from Allison. They handle all the starts and stops without issue, and it’s reassuring to know they deliver what they promise,” said Anders Karlsson. “I’ve tested other systems, like Automated Manual Transmissions (AMT), but they don’t quite perform in waste management vehicles. Allison is superior when it comes to delivering smooth and seamless driving on short routes, which works perfectly for waste collection tasks.
Allison fully automatic transmissions have a fully hydraulic torque converter and Continuous Power Technology™ which minimizes the wear and tear and provides no power drops when shifting gears, resulting in a very smooth drive for the driver and crew.
When Nordisk Återvinning invests in new vehicles, they ensure that the drivers’ opinions are part of the process.
“We always try to consider the drivers’ feedback when ordering new trucks. Choosing the right equipment is crucial for making the workday run smoothly. We always aim to make the job easier for the driver. This applies to every part of our vehicles, including the transmission. It must be stable and proven. If it’s also easy to handle, the staff will perceive the entire truck as easy to drive,” Anders Karlsson said. “Allison’s transmissions help us deliver high quality and ensure a safe work environment for our drivers, which is positive for both us and them”, Anders Karlsson concluded.
