Allison Automatic transmissions incorporate a hydraulic torque converter that connects the engine to the transmission via a planetary gear set. This torque converter facilitates seamless power transfer during gear changes, providing uninterrupted, continuous power shifts.

While the manual clutch pedal is removed on an AMT, this mechanical clutch still facilitates the vehicle’s launch and will wear and eventually burn out, requiring traditional maintenance and replacement. 
Maneuverability
The torque converter in an Allison Automatic provides a continuously variable gear ratio, enhancing vehicle maneuverability. This feature allows for precise power distribution to the wheels, ensuring smooth creeping, accurate maneuvering and control on inclines. It also aids in the protection of the driveline from shocks and minimizes vehicle wear and tear. By comparison, AMTs lack a torque converter and may have difficulties in providing smooth power delivery, leading to increased wear on the clutch and potential driveline issues.
