Allison Transmission Gives Sydney Equipment Transport Operator a More Reliable Alternative

A long-established family-owned specialist machinery transport company has committed to Allison Automatics because of the reliability and drivability advantages it offers over manual and automated manual transmission (AMT) alternatives.

SYDNEY, August 26, 2022 - Allison Transmission, the largest global manufacturer of medium- and heavy-duty fully automatic transmissions for commercial vehicles, is proud to announce that Sydney-based equipment transport operator J&R Telfer has selected an Allison 4430 fully automatic transmission for its latest Isuzu FYJ rigid. The Telfer Isuzu operates across the entire Sydney metropolitan area, transporting earthmoving equipment, demountable buildings and heavy machinery to and from building sites and storage yards using a uniquely designed load bed and hydraulic beaver tail ramps.

“In my opinion the Allison Automatic is the ideal choice for our operations because it offers better performance and reliability than AMTs or manuals,” said Toney Telfer, Owner of J&R Telfer. “My view is if you are going to buy an automatic then it should have a proper torque converter like the Allison, because they are better at handling low traction conditions and for take offs from a standstill.”

Toney cites some bad experiences with an AMT-equipped truck in the past, in particular one which saw the transmission leave him stranded mid corner with a mis-change, along with overall poor performance.

“I would not contemplate anything but an Allison in any trucks I buy, for a number of reasons, mostly the drivability and ergonomics, but also because of the safety they offer with the excellent retarder and gear selection on descents,” said Telfer. “We work all over Sydney and handle a range of work so we need a truck that is both versatile and reliable as well as being easy to drive in traffic.”

“The Allison Automatic also means we have better control over the truck in yards and on construction sites, because these days a lot of drivers aren’t very skilled with manuals and clutch control and the automatic removes any worries in that regard,” said Telfer. “Apart from that, when I drive the Allison-equipped truck I enjoy the ergonomics. I can drive a manual, but I am not getting any younger and if you are in traffic all day, as we always are, the automatic is a lot better in reducing fatigue and ensuring you stay focused throughout the day.”

The Telfer Isuzu is based on an 8x4 FYJ model fitted with an innovative 9.8 metre table top tray with an added steerable lift axle, as well as a moveable power beaver tail. Toney says this makes the truck extremely versatile and multi-purpose, allowing it to easily load mid-size excavators and earthmoving equipment up to nearly 18 tonnes.

J&R Telfer was started more than 40 years ago by Toney’s parents, John and Robyn and now Toney has been joined in the business by his son, Alex, making the operation a truly multi-generational operation.
