Allison Transmissions are the Automatic Choice for Leading Australian Transport Company

Major Adelaide transport company, Collins Transport, has added an Allison-equipped Hyundai Mighty light duty truck to its fleet of more than 180 trucks to improve inner city delivery operation

ADELAIDE, Australia, July 22, 2022 - Collins Transport, one of the largest and longest established transport companies in South Australia, has a long history of buying Kenworth line haul prime movers. However, when the company needed to replace an unreliable manual delivery van used for inner city distribution work, the Allison-equipped automatic Hyundai Mighty proved the perfect choice, particularly given it spends a lot of time travelling in and out of Adelaide’s famous Central Market.

The company chose the Hyundai Mighty because it was fitted with Allison’s 1000 SeriesTM fully automatic transmission. Hyundai’s Mighty is the only light duty truck in the Australian market to be offered with an Allison automatic.

The automatic Hyundai has just clocked up its first year on the Collins fleet covering around 45,000 trouble free kilometres, working every day in heavy inner-city traffic, and in tight situations.

“We really had to buy an automatic equipped vehicle because it is really difficult to find staff who can drive a manual truck or van these days. A lot of employees just don’t know how to drive a manual, so an automatic was really important in our buying plans for a light duty truck,” said Carl Hamilton, Collins Transport’s National Workshop Manager. “The Hyundai is on the road every day 12 hours a day, and although it doesn’t cover many kilometres, it is constantly in traffic and maneuvering around tight confined areas at the markets and in warehouse situations. The Allison automatic makes it easier and safer for our drivers in those crowded situations, allowing them to concentrate on steering and braking and not having to worry about changing gears.”

Collins Transport Trucks are a familiar sight on Australian roads with vivid green prime movers and striking white bodies and trailers. While the vast majority of its trucks are either semitrailers and 16 pallet rigid trucks, the light duty Hyundai is the only four pallet small truck on the fleet and its performance has prompted Hamilton to indicate that it would be happy to buy more Allison equipped Hyundai.

“We have had no issues with the Hyundai at all and the Allison transmission performs particularly well. We would have no hesitation in buying more when demand requires it,” said Hamilton. “The drivers love the automatic and it feels just like a car to drive.”

Based in the Adelaide suburb of Wingfield, Collins Transport was established in 1965 by John Collins, who started out carrying produce between Adelaide and Melbourne using a single Dodge five-tonne tray truck, which he drove himself.

Today the company specialises in temperature-controlled transport and storage of a range of perishable produce and John Collins’ sons Neil and Craig now run the business, but John remains actively involved in the business.
