過酷な環境でのレースで、アリソンがフルATを搭載した多くのトラックが、優れた走行性能と耐久性を実証
インディアナポリス、2020年2月4日— 世界で最も過酷なオフロードレースの一つであるダカール・ラリー2020のトラック部門において、12日間もの激戦の末、アリソン製フルAT搭載車がトップ10に多数入賞しました。また2日後に開催された第12回アフリカエコレース2020のトラック部門においても、15日間という長期戦を戦い抜き、アリソン製フルAT搭載のスカニアが優勝し、アリソン製フルATの類稀なる耐久性と走破性を実証しました。

アフリカエコレースは、モロッコ、モーリタニア、セネガルを1月4日~19日に走破するラリーで、総走行距離は6,500kmにおよび、内4,200kmを12日間のタイムトライアルで競います。エントリーした54台の乗用車やトラックならびにオートバイや競技用特別仕様車が、アフリカ大陸北西部の起伏の激しい岩石やサハラ砂漠を横断し、50時間に及ぶ激しい競争の末、3時間半の差をつけてこの大会のトラック部門(Group T4)で優勝を飾ったのは、アリソン4000シリーズ搭載のスカニア社製トルピードで参戦したハンガリーのクエリスポーツ・レーシング・チームでした。トルピードの13リッターエンジンは、アリソン4000シリーズを搭載し、最大出力トルクは4,700Nmです。
優勝したクエリスポーツのドライバー、ミクローシュ・コヴァーチ氏は、「アリソンのトランスミッションはクラッチペダルやレバーを操作する必要がないので、砂丘を縫って走るのが本当に楽しかったです。ずっと両手でハンドルを握っていられたことが過酷な運転にとっては非常に有利でしたし、車内で体を安定させるのに左脚を使うこともできたわけです。それに、トランスミッションがドライバーのアクセルワークに瞬時に応えてくれるので、加速は常に力強くスムーズで、勢いよく砂丘を出ることができました。クロスカントリーラリーでは深い砂から抜け出さなくてはならない時によく負けてしまうのですが、我々がそこで時間をロスしたことは一度もありませんでした」と述べています。
今年初めてサウジアラビアで開催されたダカール・ラリー2020は、紅海に臨むジッダから始まり、ハサ地方の油田・ガス田地帯まで東へと進み、その後折り返して首都リヤド近郊でゴールを迎えるものでした。およそ46台のトラック、乗用車、オートバイ、四輪バイク、特別仕様車が、7,800kmの行程で、気温・湿度・標高の激しい変化に立ち向かいました。戦いに傷つきながらも生き残った者たちがレースの終着点にたどり着いた時、アリソン製トランスミッションを搭載したトラックがトップ10の多くを占めていました。
