SHANGHAI, August 30, 2024 - Allison Transmission, the world's leading designer and manufacturer of commercial propulsion systems, has helped SHACMAN achieve great success in the overseas tractor market by providing the company with high-performance transmissions. As of the second quarter of 2024, more than 100 SHACMAN offset tractors equipped with Allison 3000 SeriesTM transmissions have been successfully exported to Cape Town and Port Elizabeth in South Africa, where they are used for transport work in important local ports.
Tractors need to frequently travel short distances, make continuous turns and operate at low speeds with heavy loads in port operations. The tractors exported to South Africa have a gross mass of up to 80 tons fully loaded and are equipped with a Cummins QSB6.7-C240 engine with a rated power of 178 kilowatts and a maximum torque of 970 newton-meters, as well as an Allison 3500P fully automatic transmission, which ensures excellent performance and operating efficiency during demanding stop-start duty cycles. The transmission is equipped with the 6th Gen Controls system with FuelSense 2.0® fuel-saving technology to further reduce fleet operating costs.
In early July, dozens of SHACMAN tractors were successfully delivered to Transnet, a state-owned logistics company in South Africa, to support transport operations at the Cape Town Container Terminal (CTCT). As a world-class container port, CTCT plays a central role in the regional economy. However, inclement weather at the beginning of July severely impacted the terminal's operations. The Allison-equipped vehicles have proven key in improving efficiency in moving containers within CTCT by boosting operational recovery following the inclement weather.
In busy port operations, Allison fully automatic transmissions have been the quiet heroes, helping tractor drivers stay focused and achieve precise vehicle handling. Allison’s Continuous Power Technology™ ensures that the transmission transmits engine power to the wheels smoothly and without interruption. In addition, the transmission's control module supports customized Power Take-Off (PTO) operating times and modes, and operators can activate or deactivate PTO with just the push of a button. In such a specific environment, the driver only needs two hands on the steering wheel to concentrate on vehicle maneuvering and operations to transport containers weighing tens of tons.
"Allison fully automatic transmissions are designed to meet the most stringent requirements, delivering superior productivity, reduced maintenance costs and precise vehicle control. Building on this foundation, Allison will also combine its proven operating experience and extensive service network around the world to help SHACMAN continue to expand into international markets," said David Wu, Managing Director, China Sales at Allison Transmission.
