Load-Based Shift Scheduling (LBSS)
To optimize fuel economy and maintain superior Allison Automatic performance, Allison LBSS automatically selects between Economy and Performance shift schedules based on the vehicle's actual payload and the grade on which it is operating. It has proven to increase fuel economy by up to 5%*.
*Results may vary depending on operating conditions.
Recent fuel consumption testing conducted by Transportation Research Center, an independent, third party test facility, proved that Allison Automatics get better fuel efficiency than manual or automated manual transmissions.
Reduced Engine Load at Stop (RELS)
With RELS, the transmission automatically reduces the load on the engine when the vehicle is at a full stop. RELS not only saves fuel, it reduces overall vehicle emissions all while remaining invisible to the operator. This feature is useful for city traffic and duty cycles with frequent stops forcing the engine to idle.
Allison prognostics allow you to quickly monitor oil life, filter life and transmission health. Prognostics take the guesswork and hassle out of scheduling routine vehicle maintenance to save you time and money while providing maximum protection for the transmission. That means less downtime, lower life-cycle costs and, best of all, greater productivity for your fleet.
Startability is a vehicle's capability to launch and pull a load. Simply put, it's the 'grunt' or 'get-up-and-go' of a truck. Often only 1st gear ratio is used to judge a vehicle's startability. The truth is, one has to consider the engine torque at the required launch rpm and the torque multiplication of the Allison torque converter. Manual and automated manual transmissions have to launch at very low engine rpm in order to prevent damage to the clutch. This means less torque, which is why they have very deep 1st gear ratios to help them overcome their clutch limitations.
An Allison Automatic uses the full torque from the engine and multiplies it with the torque converter. When the 1st gear ratio and rear axle ratio are factored in, the Allison provides greater startability.

Operating in the heavily populated Mid-Atlantic region, Fleet Transit, Inc. delivers fuel to gas stations throughout the northern Virginia, Washington, D.C. and Baltimore areas. Fuel delivery is a very time-sensitive and competitive business. "We have to work smarter, and that's one of the main reasons we bought Allison transmissions. I think they're a better deal in the long run for us. They make our fleet more economically viable on a cost-per-mile basis."
– Kevin McNeil, President of Fleet Transit, Inc.
David credits the reliability of Allison automatic transmissions for keeping the fleet on the road and out of the repair shop. "The drivers don't have to be concerned with what gear to shift to next. Allison's been a big part of keeping the trucks more reliable and getting the product where it needs to go."
– David Chovanec, fleet maintenance coordinator for Blue Bell
Shift Energy Management/Low Range Torque Protection (SEM/LRTP)
SEM/LRTP provides better engine/transmission integration to optimize the entire driveline system. The result is faster, smoother, more consistent shift quality, increased powertrain durability, improved performance and an overall more efficient vehicle operation leading to greater fuel economy. This sophisticated communication between the engine and transmission serves as the foundation for other features.
Increased Ratings and Internal Enhancements
For 2010, horsepower and torque ratings have increased on 1000/2000 models to allow a broader range of applications at a lower initial cost. The power required to charge the oil lube distribution and main pressure system of the 1000/2000 models has also been reduced. The result is more efficient operation that helps improve fuel economy.
- Variable Modulated Main reduces main pressure when clutch apply system does not require full main pressure.
- New Wave Friction Plates reduce internal drag
